About us

The formation of New Forest Transition Hub was inspired by at least two factors. First was the publication of the Transition Handbook in March 2008. Second, the fact that its content seemed, in many ways, to tie in with many local initiatives that were already in place across the New Forest Area.

The Forest was voted the 'most responsible tourist destination in the world' in 2007. Whether or not this is a scientifically proven fact it is a testimony to the enormous amount of activity that has been taking place here to provide a holiday destination with as light a footprint as possible. Included within this is an increasing emphasis on local food, sustainably produced. It's a positive example of how the New Forest District Council and local businesses are working cooperatively for environmental benefit.

In addition much work has been achieved via funding from the New Forest National Park Authority's Sustainable Development Fund. This has encouraged local groups such as those in Brockenhurst to undertake a project to help residents lower their carbon footprint through a mix of information and practical help. Another recent project was one to reduce plastic bag use in Ashurst with the local Junior School getting really involved in the whole issue.

The idea of Transition perfectly represents what is now required to take serious action to increase the area's resilience to cope better with the shocks that are on the way as as energy prices rise and fossil fuel availability decreases.

A small group of highly motivated people have now formed the New Forest Transition Hub and it is hoped that the Hub will now reach out to many existing community networks and build on the momentum.

We have many plans and ideas and would love to hear from anyone who wants to get involved.
